I think my favorite was the first one because there are some genuinely creepy moments throughout it including various scenes where "something" just shows up. Out of the four stories I'd argue that the fourth one was the weakest but it too is still rather good and especially how it connects everything. All anthology films are going to be uneven and that's certainly the case here but director Roy Ward Baker did a very good job with all of the stories and the screenplay by Robert Bloch (PSYCHO) was also extremely good. Having finally revisited the film after all of these years I can see why my younger self didn't like this since there's really not any gore or violence but seeing it after all these years has really made me appreciate it even more. ASYLUM is a film that I first watched when I was around ten-years-old and I honestly didn't care for it too much. Finally, the fourth inmate (Herbert Lom) has an interesting hobby that includes robots. The third story centers on the young Barbara (Charlotte Rampling) who talks about her relationship with a mysterious woman (Britt Ekland). the second story involves a broke tailor who is asked by a mysterious man (Peter Cushing) to make an even more mysterious suit.

The first is a young woman (Barbara Parkins) who tells her about being a mistress to a man who murdered his wife. Rutherford feels it would be best for Martin to interview four different patients and hear their stories. Martin (Robert Powell) shows up at an asylum for a job interview given by Dr. Satisfying from start to finish.Īsylum (1972) *** (out of 4) Dr. However, because of the freshness of the four stories and sick (but cool) way that the main plot was handled, I am very glad I tried this film. After all, VAULT OF HORROR was not a particularly good film. Overall, I was very surprised by this film, as I had very low expectations. He is working on making little robot-like creatures that he swears will become living things-when he wills his consciousness into them. The fourth is about a man named Byron (Herbert Lom), who introduces himself as a physician. Immediately after, Rampling's friend (Britt Ekland) comes and says she is the one who phoned the nurse and that Rampling should stop taking "those pills" and "just leave everything up to me". So, assuming Rampling would take a long nap, she leaves. However, after being sent to bed with a sedative, the nurse gets a phone call saying her mother took a fall and is in the emergency room. Apparently she'd been in some sort of hospital and she has a nurse assigned to watch her. The third stars Charlotte Rampling and is about her returning to the home she shares with her brother. It turns out this suit is part of some macabre spell to revive the man's dead son. The second is about a tailor (Barry Morse)who is told he'd be given a huge sum to make a suit made of a special fabric the customer (Peter Cushing) brings with him. He decides to kill the wife, but serious complications ensue. It involves an affair she is having with a married man. When I worked at such a facility many years ago, my job interview was nothing like that! The first story is told by a woman (Barbara Parkins). Starr, then he gets the job! Pretty strange.

If he can interview four patients and determine which one is Dr. The head of the hospital makes the doctor a bet. A young doctor comes to a mental institution because he wants a job. There is a very strange story that connects the four stories that make up ASYLUM. In VAULT, the stories are all told by people about their own deaths. This film is from Amicus Productions, the same people that made another film with a similar structure and style (THE VAULT OF HORROR, 1973).
